Attempt to Deliver in ‘3 Idiots’ Style Results in Dead Baby and Damaged Uterus

In what be termed a case of gross irresponsibility and negligence, a pregnant woman lost her baby and ended up with a damaged uterus when her delivery went wrong. The incident took place on October 3 in the Sai Hospital of Odisha when the nurses tried to coordinate with the doctor on phone and attempt a caesarean operation on Aarti Samal.

The doctor who advised Aarti’s husband, Kalpatru, to admit her in the hospital by assuring him of proper care despite his absence from the hospital is the primal cause of this incident. Dr. Rashmikant Patra perhaps found it passable to coordinate with the nurses in the hospital over phone and guide them through the delivery process, which involved a complicated ceasarean operation.

Fancying or recreating a romantic or comedy scene from movies is one thing and trying to recreate or even attempt a surgical scene is another. What on earth made the doctor feel that he could successfully attempt a delivery in 3 Idiots style is beyond our understanding but what we do know is that a mother lost her child and even had her uterus damaged because of this highly irresponsible behavior of the doctor they were banking on.

Kalpatru isn’t sure of the person or team who tried their inexperienced hands at his wife but he is appalled at the loss of his child. He took the dead baby to the police station and filed an FIR against the doctor.

“When we contacted Dr Rashmikant Patra, he asked us to get her admitted in the hospital. He informed us that he is not present in the hospital but will coordinate with the nurses for proper care once we get her admitted in the hospital,” he said. “He did not arrive even when the condition of my wife got critical. I don’t know who did it but my wife was operated upon and we lost our first baby. My wife’s uterus is also damaged. The nurses said that they had coordinated with the doctor over the phone and had given their 100 per cent. It is only because of their negligence of the hospital authority.”

The matter is being investigated and a case of negligence has been filed against Dr. Patra. Though the baby is lost forever, we do hope justice is served and doctors start taking their profession more seriously.
