A scan at Rajkummar Rao's films are certain to throw up memories of distinct characters that speak of a talent that's been well tapped upon. With as many as eight Rao starrers hitting screens in 2017, including the critically-acclaimed Trapped and Bareilly Ki Barfi, the year has been particularly fruitful for the actor.

Ahead of the release of Newton, the actor tells mid-day he is comfortable in the space that he has carved for himself. "I hope my producers find me bankable. I have never compartmentalised films into commercial and independent movies. Every genre is my space."

Driven by his desire to do justice to his characters, Rao goes to several lengths to bring about physical and mental transformations, feats that he describes as "part of my job". The motivation inspires him to greenlight great stories, whether they see him in headlining acts, or as part of an ensemble.

"I'm not looking for big- films or solo starrers. I try to be part of wonderful stories. Lavish sets or better vanity vans never drove me to acting." Having recently completed shooting for Newton in the Naxal-dominant parts of Chhattisgarh, Rao says his team did not encounter any difficulty during the process. "I met wonderful people, who are sweet and helpful. It was a breeze to shoot there. There was no fear of the Naxals."
